One Microphone
Before coming to Prescription recording, The Rockats ( Rockabilly) recorded a demo at CCIR radio in London. It sounds crazy but it was done using just 1 mic on the whole band. When they submitted it to the record label, they said if you can finish the record sounding exactly like that you've got a deal! John Willoughby, knew Prescription was the place to do it because we had done a lot of work together in Jet Black Machine, and so under his insistence the boys hopped the pond to record it with us. Man did we hit the bulls eye!! We've recorded the lead vocalist that sang on one of the most famous songs in Rock and Roll history in the past, and he told us how they did that stuff with 1 mic in the early 50's.
Most of that science was very applicable, mixing by positioning, except we didn't hang the mic up by the ceiling, and the use of a small dead room kept things clean reverb wise. We added a little mic pre clip here and there to get that "Gene Vincent" edge, went to 1 track analog at a peak of +3 on my 8 track 1/2 inch, added a little delay and a few other goodies in the mix and it blew everybody away!! I swear it sounds like it was recorded back in 1952 with the Jordanairs singing backup! Our tracks were easily the best on the E.P. and on the later release Rollin' Thunder. The Rockats have been on quite a number of labels, RCA and Island records are most notable, and the e-mails are coming back to the Rockats are saying that the cuts done at Prescription are the BEST SOUNDING RECORDS THEY'VE EVER DONE!
As I write this we have a 5 star review on Amazon.com!
Yeah that's right. With 1 mic on a whole band we still kick the other studios butts!!
